Some History

McDowell County was created in 1858 from Tazewell County ( Virginia ) and named in honor of James McDowell, Governor of Virginia, 1842-1844. The county has an area of 538.4 square miles and is divided into four magisterial districts: Big Creek, Browns Creek, North Elkins, and Sandy River.
