Free Credit Counseling Class is Slated

In addition to having a clean drug test and no domestic violence conviction, a good credit record is very important, if one hopes to obtain a job at the new federal prison, says EDA Director Rachel Lester.

“For various reasons, many people have a blemished credit record,” Lester says. “The Bureau of Prisons (BOP) doesn't expect prospective employees to have a perfect credit record, but their credit record needs to be pretty good if they hope to be hired.”

The reason for the good credit requirement is simple, Lester says.

“The BOP tries to remove all temptation. An employee with a good credit record who isn't over-extended financially is less likely to accept any kind of bribe from a prisoner seeking special favors,” she explains. “It's that simple.”

The good news, Lester says, is that there's still time for local residents to improve their credit before the actual hiring process begins.

That's why the EDA, in cooperation with other local non-profits, is offering a free “Understanding Your Credit” class on Thursday, November 9 at 6 p.m. The class will be held in Welch and the location will be announced shortly, Lester says. The particular location in Welch will depend on the number of people who enroll in the course. For information on the Welch location, or to enroll in the free class, contact the EDA at 436-3833 as soon as possible, Lester says.

The free credit counseling class, Lester notes, will teach participants:

  • How to receive a free credit report
  • How to read the report
  • How to understand the information
  • How to dispute incorrect information on their credit report
  • What to do to help repair their credit, and many other credit related issues

“It's important that participants enroll as soon as possible,” Lester stresses. “We encourage them to call us today and register for this very helpful class.”
